PhD Scholarships
NZICA is pleased to launch a new scholarship programme for accounting students – NZICA Leading Light Scholarships.
The Leading Light Scholarships gives you the chance to set yourself apart and provides a platform to take you anywhere.
Purpose of scholarships
To grow future academics in the accounting profession by nurturing our brightest achievers who will directly contribute knowledge to the New Zealand accounting profession or academic accounting community.
Selection criteria
In addition to being an NZICA Student Affiliate and committed to the NZICA pathway, we are looking for two outstanding students who deliver strong academic results and who would like to move into and to enter an academic career.

2. CV and cover letter
Provide a current CV and cover letter with your application that addresses how your work will help contribute knowledge to the New Zealand accounting profession or academic accounting community. Please also include a statement of career intentions
3. Written references from two academic referees
At least one of which must be the applicant’s supervisor. See Terms & Conditions Point 10 for reference guidelines.
The references should highlight:
- the skills of the applicant as an academic and as a researcher
- the applicant’s ability to complete the research on schedule
- the strengths and weaknesses of the research
- the contribution the research will make to the New Zealand accounting profession or the New Zealand academic accounting community, and their level of support for the application
Referees should email their References to scholarships@nzica.com with the title "Academic Reference for PhD Scholarship applicant (insert name)"
4. Research proposal (maximum 3000 words)
- Statement of the motivation for the research including the impact attaining funding will have
- Supporting statement - how you feel that you meet the conditions and intentions of the PhD Scholarship
- How the research will directly contribute knowledge to the New Zealand accounting profession or the New Zealand academic accounting community. Including its enduring relevance to the profession of New Zealand.
- Description of the research question and theoretical framework
- Description of justification of the method(s) and data to be used in the research
5. Research timeline report
- Stages of completion, status and timing for literature review, data collection, data analysis, discussion chapters and conclusions.
- Submission of 6 monthly Progress Reports
- Submission of Required Research Outcomes (listed below)
6. Research outcomes
- Draft report/ Thesis outline submitted to NZICA*
- Article for possible NZICA Publication*
- Occasional paper for NZICA publication
- Final copy of Thesis provided for NZICA Library*

7. Funding statement
- List all current funding secured for completion of this PhD from all sources; and what that funding has/will be used for
- List all previous funding secured through NZICA for this and other projects within the past two (2) years
- If no other funding has been secured please indicate
