Academic requirements for membership

If you're a student interested in becoming an NZICA member, use the following table as a guide for meeting the academic requirements for membership.

Chartered Accountant Associate Chartered Accountant Accounting Technician

Four years of degree-level study

 

Completion of a recognised bachelor's degree

 

Completion of recognised courses in the following topics delivered by an NZICA accredited tertiary institution (see below).

 

Recognised courses:

  • Advanced financial accounting
  • Advanced management accounting
  • Advanced auditing and assurance
  • Advanced taxation
  • Advanced business finance/treasury
  • Accounting information systems
  • Economics
  • Organisational management
  • Statistics
  • Commercial law
  • 30 credits of liberal studies.

Completion of a bachelor's degree with an accounting major at an NZICA accredited tertiary institution

 

OR

 

Completion of a bachelor's degree at a New Zealand university, polytechnic or institute of technology, plus coverage of the following accounting and business topics at an NZICA accredited tertiary institution (see below).

 

Approved accounting and business topics:

  • 200 level Financial accounting
  • 300 level Advanced financial accounting OR Advanced management accounting
  • One 300 level accounting course from one of the following areas (but not the areas chosen in bullet point 2 above):
    • Financial accounting
    • Management accounting
    • Auditing
    • New Zealand taxation
    • Business finance/treasury
    • Accounting information systems
  • Four business courses (100 level or higher) across four of the following subject areas:
    • Economics
    • Organisational management
    • Information Systems
    • New Zealand commercial law
    • Insolvency
    • Marketing
    • Business finance.

Two years diploma (New Zealand Diploma in Business) or degree level study, including coverage of required accounting and business topics (see below).

 

Required business topics:

  • Accounting principles
  • Accounting practice
  • New Zealand commercial law
  • Economics
  • Organisational management
  • Business communication (not required for degree level programmes)
  • Information technology
  • 200-level (level 6) financial accounting
  • 200-level (level 6) management accounting
  • Two 200-level (level 6) courses from:
    • auditing
    • New Zealand taxation
    • business finance
  • one further course.
